Burdwan SP to leave state

Burdwan SP to leave state
December 08, 2010

The Burdwan superintendent of police, R Rajshekharan, against whom the Trinamool Congress had repeatedly brought allegations of being biased towards the ruling party, is about to leave the state on a central government deputation. Just two days ago, Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee had lashed out against Rajshekharan at a public rally in Burdwan. For the past few months, Trinamool Congress has been vocal against the IPS officer, alleging that he has been working under CPM’s instructions and have also demanded his transfer. The matter had been raised by the party with DGP Naparajit Mukherjee and governor M K Narayanan. Under the circumstances, Rajshekharan himself applying for a transfer, about three months ago, assumes significance. The state government has already cleared Rajshekharan’s appeal to release him. The Centre has cleared the proposal. The IPS officer’s leaving the state on the deputation is now a matter of time, said sources. The state government will now appoint another officer to take over as the Burdwan SP. Rajshekharan had applied for a transfer to his home state Tamil Nadu, reasoning that he wanted his children to get educated in their mother tongue. However, now that Delhi has cleared the proposal for a Central deputation, the IPS officer will join the National Crime Records Bureau in New Delhi. At an earlier rally in Burdwan, the Trinamool Congress supremo had said: “During his tenure as the SP of Burdwan, several Trinamool supporters have been killed — in Mangalkote, Jamalpur, Galsi and Ketugram. It was he who had orchestrated all these killings. Even a CPM cadre shows more sympathy to common people than this IPS officer.” Even Partha Chatterjee has raised serious allegations against the Burdwan SP, saying, “He is working under the directive of CPM and not in the best interests of the people.”
